Chesterfield received a shock on their return to the basement division after a five year absence when York City went ahead with their first attack. Under new owner Darren Brown and new manager Nicky Law, after a nervy start, the Spireite wave of optimism overcame the early setback and an opening day win was secured with four goals in twenty-four second half minutes. Referee Mark Clattenburg was taking charge of his first Football League game. The 25 year-old official gave his red card its first airing when he dismissed York skipper Peter Swan for an off-the-ball incident in the midst of the goal flood.
