Simpkins's versatility helped Chesterfield manager Nicky Law operate two defensive systems with equal success in the 2000-01 season. Although able to play as a left back in a back four, he is more comfortable as one of three centre halves, where his positional sense and ability to read a game comes more to the fore.
He proved to be a valuable squad member for the Spireites in their successful promotion campaign. He signed for Cardiff City in the summer. They had been promoted to Division Two along with the Spireites.
Simpkins was released by Cardiff City in January 2003. He joined Rochdale in July 2003 on a two-year contract but his Dale contract was cancelled in June 2004.
