Although nominally a midfielder, Ryan operated down the wings for Chesterfield in 2000-01, usually favouring the right but able to pop up anywhere to torment opponents.
Difficult to dispossess, he weighed in with many important goals and set up countless more with fine crosses.
Irrepressible, persistent and cheerful, Ryan's obvious enjoyment of his role endeared him greatly to the Spireites' supporters.
Ryan signed for Hull City in the summer of 2001 before moving on to Bristol Rovers in December 2003 (after a loan spell) with a contract up to December 2005.
