Assistant manager Tommy Cunningham's pledge that Barnet would go all out for a win at leaders Chesterfield proved well founded as the visitors ended the Spireites unbeaten start to the season. Chesterfield were soon in command but the Bees gradually drew their confident opponent's sting and took the lead just before the break when the impressive Rob Sawyers beat Ian Breckin to Darren Currie's right wing cross. Nicky Law's half-time battlecry did the trick as Chesterfield were level after 31 seconds of the restart. David Reeves swung his right leg at a loose ball and saw his effort balloon over Lee Harrison into the net. This merely seemed to jolt Barnet to greater efforts and they were soon back in front. Once again Sawyers was involved; Mike Pollitt couldn't hold his shot from the edge of the area and veteran striker Ken Charlery pounced from six yards. Chesterfield threw everyone forward in the closing stages but the Bees held out for their first away win of the season.
