In a match with teams managed by Brian Laws and Nicky Law, it was referee Graham Laws who was involved in the major incident of the first half. The Whitley Bay whistler sent-off Chesterfield ace David Reeves for an off-the-ball incident involving Nathan Stanton. The top of the table ten men continued to hold United at bay, then took full advantage of one of their three corners. Ryan Williams swung in a left wing flag kick for sub Roger Willis to rise above a challenge from Scunny skipper Steve Torpey at the far post. Iron new boy Peter Morrison then provided his own brand of left wing trickery to supply a telling right-foot cross for Torpey to redress the balance. The late strike denied Chesterfield's bid to post a 100% record of 12 points out of 12 available so far while Scunthorpe were pleased to bounce back from defeat at Rochdale two days earlier.
