Shrewsbury Town v Carlisle United, 29 August 2000

The early term meeting of two of last season's basement strugglers suggested Shrewsbury are set for another tough campaign as Carlisle snatched their first victory of 2000/01, and their first away success since their ultimately vital win at Chester in April. In a game of few chances, the Shrews remained winless and anchored to the bottom of the Football League. A sign of the evening's eventual outcome came as early as the 3rd minute when Ross Davidson's header hit the bar. Luke Weaver went on to make two fine saves from Chris Freestone. With the game drifting towards a tame draw, former Shrew Ian Stevens struck. Scott Dobie got clear down the Carlisle left, and Stevens met his cross from eight yards out to give Ian Dunbavin no chance. It earned Carlisle's first win at Gay Meadow since April 1993.
