Winstanley joined Carlisle United in 2000 and went on to produce some fine performances for the Cumbrian club. He played particularly well in the crucial victory at Barnet and in the game at Southend when a vital point was secured. One of the more experienced players in the squad he is a central defender who is strong in the air and very effective on the left-hand side.
