Barnet got their new season off to a flying start by taking full advantage of a new law. Town's Wayne Thomas was booked for dissent so referee North moved the ball ten yards forward. Now from inside the area, Scott McGleish swept the resulting free kick home after John Doolan's shot was charged down. Barnet's domination reflected the gap between the two teams from last season. The Shrews not only quickly used their subs but also changed formation in an attempt to halt the Bees onslaught.

Comments:

Barnet survived an uncertain summer to open the campaign still at Underhill. They gave a debut to Tony Richards (signed on the eve of the game)and Wayne Purser. The former Queens Park Rangers striker completed the scoring on his first League outing. This was the fourth season in a row that Barnet won their opening day fixture

Comments:

Having secured their League status with a 1999/2000 last day win at Exeter City, Kevin Ratcliffe's Shrews seemed set for another season of struggle in this comprehensive defeat. Town gave debuts to Iain Jenkins, Chris Freestone and Nigel Jemson.
