Edmondson's original YTS stint at Hull City was terminated due to homesickness. He went on to prove a reliable performer at Carlisle United, Huddersfield Town and York City.
Having declined the offer of a new deal at York at the end of the 2001-02 season, Edmondson subsequently put pen to paper on a new contract on 22 July for a undisclosed period.
Edmondson joined Chester City in July 2004 with a one-year contract.
