Both teams were forced to make changes to a winning line-up and, after a dramatic opening, the game fizzled out into a stalemate. Peter Duffield had left Darlington for York in the summer and it was claimed that the striker's new contract included a bonus of £1,000 for every goal he scores. If true, the Duffield bank balance received an early boost after he was flattened by Andy Collett before sending a low spot kick past the keeper's left. Darlington were still unbeaten following manager Gary Bennett's sudden August appointment, and the Quakers quickly responded. Tom Kaak rose between Barry Jones and Mark Sertori from ex-York midfielder Gary Himsworth's left wing corner to score for the second home league game in a row. A feast of goals failed to materialise but Darlo came closest when they hit the bar twice in ten second half seconds.
