Another Steve Soley late, late show left both teams waiting for their first win of the new campaign. United needed two goals in the last ten minutes from last term's top scorer to snatch a draw in their Brunton Park opener against Halifax Town, and York looked set to lift themselves off the bottom spot as they lead two minutes into injury time. Then under the new ruling, a free kick midway inside their half was advanced ten yards by referee Phil Richards after Mark Sertori was cautioned for dissent. With the target now in Soley's range, he stroked an accurate shot wide of Northern Ireland keeper Alan Fettis. Far from happy with their point, Carlisle boss Ian Atkins admitted he was bitterly disappointed with his team's display. The Minstermen had taken a deserved lead with a penalty on the hour mark. Mark Birch pushed over Kevin Hulme before Peter Duffield converted to Luke Weaver's left.
