Rochdale were good value for their second away win in four days as York were subjected to their first defeat in six League & Cup games. The game swung on two goal incidents within a minute. First, Colin Alcide thought he had given York the advantage with a tremendous 25-yard shot on the turn, only to be thwarted by a terrific save from Neil Edwards. Dale then went up the other end to take the lead. Clive Platt was allowed to 'walk' through the City defence and stroke a right foot shot past the exposed Alan Fettis. On a wet pitch, Rochdale confirmed their dominance when Mark Monington - starting a game for the first time since April - headed Paul Ware's right wing corner into the bottom right corner from the far post. Without broken leg victim Peter Duffield, the York attack failed to make an impact and were unable to record another on-target attempt.
