At the end of a traumatic close season that had seen the Essex club facing a winding-up order brought by the Inland Revenue and chairman John Main on the brink of dismissal following a boardroom power struggle, Southend were pleased to see the start of the new season. It showed in a determined performance, with last term's leading scorer Martin Carruthers needing only five minutes to open his 2000/01 account. Home goalie Woodman was only tested twice throughout while Brighton's second-half sub keeper Cartwright kept the visitors in with a chance. Former Tottenham midfielder David Lee clinched a deserved victory near the end when he advanced from his own half before unleashing a tremendous 25 yard scorcher.
