Carlisle United v Halifax Town, 12 August 2000

Having survived both of the last two campaigns on the last day of the season, Carlisle United began 2000/01 under new manager Ian Atkins and virtually a new team. It seemed to be the same old story as Halifax Town cruised to a two goal advantage by the hour, but the Cumbrian fans were heartened by a spirited comeback. Sparked by a dubious penalty - Mark Jules harshly adjudged to have fouled Tony Hemmings - Steve Soley's brace earned a dramatic last minute point. One of the few United survivors from last term, he shot home from ten yards in a packed area.

Comments:

Of the 13 players who took to the field, only four (Luke Weaver, Steve Soley, Stuart Whitehead and Scott Dobie) were on the Brunton Park books last season. Most of the new faces had arrived within the previous two weeks.

Comments:

In contrast to their hosts, Halifax Town fielded only two new signings - Steve Thompson and Gary Jones.
