Having survived both of the last two campaigns on the last day of the season, Carlisle United began 2000/01 under new manager Ian Atkins and virtually a new team. It seemed to be the same old story as Halifax Town cruised to a two goal advantage by the hour, but the Cumbrian fans were heartened by a spirited comeback. Sparked by a dubious penalty - Mark Jules harshly adjudged to have fouled Tony Hemmings - Steve Soley's brace earned a dramatic last minute point. One of the few United survivors from last term, he shot home from ten yards in a packed area.
