It was a case of the boot being on the other foot for a Cardiff team having come from two down at Barnet two days earlier. The Bank Holiday crowd, already buoyed by the new Sam Hammam era, had even more to cheer when the Bluebirds took an early lead. From a trademark Andy Legg long throw, Phil Whelan's headed clearance fell nicely for Kevin Nugent to head back and find an inviting gap between keeper Andy Woodman and former Bluebird Damon Searle. Legg was again the provider as the home side moved further ahead. His free kick was helped on by Nugent, Scott Young played the ball back across the area for Paul Brayson to tap in. City appeared to be lulled into a false sense of security and Southend - in their orange change colours - gave themselves hope when Kevin Maher reduced the arrears. An error from Mark Walton led to the former Spurs midfielder striking home a low drive. The comeback was complete when David Lee's cross found Leo Roget whose header opened up the Cardiff rearguard; Neil Tolson pounced to score. The big striker nearly turned from hero to villan as he was sent-off towards the close. Andy Legg still had time to crash a shot against the bar but big spending City had to settle for their third consecutive draw.
