The diminutive striker carved out a fine reputation at junior and reserve level but, after only two senior appearances, Paul sought to further his career away from Tyneside.
Having failed to score a senior goal in his previous two seasons at Reading, Paul proved to be something of a revelation at Cardiff City in 2000-01, netting 15 goals from just 25 starts.
He earned his place in the Bluebirds' line-up despite facing stiff competition and he showed himself to be a clever striker with an excellent eye for goal.
The former Newcastle United striker joined newly-promoted Cheltenham Town on a two-year contract in July 2002 but was made available for transfer in May 2003.
