Bonner missed a significant portion of Cardiff City's 2000-01 campaign through injury but when present he exerted considerable influence in the centre of the park. He scored his first goal in two seasons when he netted a last-minute equaliser against Hartlepool United in November paving the way for a remarkable 3-2 for the Bluebirds.
He is a gutsy and tenacious central midfield player with a thoughtful approach to the game.
Bonner was made available for transfer by Cardiff City in March 2004 and soon joined Oldham Athletic on a two-month contract. This was extended to June 2006 in May 2004 but cancelled in December 2005.
Bonner announced his retirement in January 2006 following complications to a forearm injury.
