There were no goals or points in 1986. The first Canadian World Cup goal arrived in 2022. Then, on home soil in 2026, Canada earned its first point, first win, first knockout appearance and first knockout victory.
Eleven matches tell the whole story.
Three World Cups, Three Very Different Eras
Canada’s three appearances came in very different football environments.
- 1986: a World Cup debut.
- 2022: a return after a 36-year absence and the country’s first goal at the tournament.
- 2026: a home World Cup that produced Canada’s first points, wins and knockout run.
The wider sports and media environment around the national team also changed dramatically over those four decades. By 2026, Canada had regulated online sports-betting and iGaming markets in provinces such as Ontario, alongside an established information ecosystem around Canadian online casinos. Ontario’s open regulated iGaming market, for example, launched on April 4, 2022.
But Canada’s World Cup story itself is much simpler. It is a sequence of firsts.
Mexico 1986: Canada’s First World Cup
Canada made its men’s World Cup debut at Mexico 1986 in a group with France, Hungary and the Soviet Union.

Canada lost all three matches, scored no goals and conceded five. The 1-0 defeat to France was the closest game of the group.

The numbers were modest, but they established the baseline against which every later Canadian World Cup milestone would be measured.
Qatar 2022: The 36-Year Wait Ends
Canada returned to the World Cup in 2022 after finishing first in the final round of Concacaf qualifying. The group was difficult again: Belgium, Croatia and Morocco.

The key moment came against Croatia. Alphonso Davies headed Canada in front after just over a minute, becoming the first Canadian to score at a men’s FIFA World Cup.
Croatia recovered to win 4-1, and Canada eventually left Qatar with three defeats and no points. The final group match ended in a 2-1 loss to Morocco.
Statistically, the 2022 campaign still ended with zero points. Historically, however, the first goal changed the record Canada had carried since 1986.
2026: From First Point to the Round of 16
The 2026 World Cup, co-hosted by Canada, Mexico and the United States, finally changed the shape of Canada’s tournament record.
Jesse Marsch’s team was drawn in Group B with Bosnia and Herzegovina, Qatar and Switzerland.
Group B
- Canada 1-1 Bosnia and Herzegovina — Toronto Stadium, June 12. Cyle Larin’s equaliser gave Canada its first World Cup point.
- Canada 6-0 Qatar — BC Place Vancouver, June 18. Canada’s first World Cup victory, powered by a Jonathan David hat-trick.
- Switzerland 2-1 Canada — BC Place Vancouver, June 24. Canada still finished second in Group B and advanced.
The Qatar match was the breakthrough result. Before it, Canada had played seven World Cup matches without a victory: six defeats across 1986 and 2022, followed by the draw with Bosnia and Herzegovina in 2026.
Jonathan David scored three times against Qatar, while Cyle Larin and Nathan Saliba also scored and Qatar added an own goal. FIFA lists the 6-0 result as Canada’s first victory at the tournament.
Knockout Stage
- Round of 32: South Africa 0-1 Canada — Los Angeles Stadium, June 28. Canada’s first World Cup knockout victory.
- Round of 16: Canada 0-3 Morocco — Houston Stadium, July 4. Canada’s run ended in the last 16.
The South Africa match was Canada’s first appearance in a World Cup knockout round and immediately produced another first: a knockout win.
Morocco ended the run 3-0 in Houston before losing 2-0 to France in the quarter-finals. FIFA’s final tournament standings placed Canada 14th overall and highlighted the country’s first point, group-stage win, knockout appearance and knockout victory.

The contrast is sharp. Canada played its first six World Cup matches, across 1986 and 2022, without earning a point. In 2026, it earned four group-stage points and then added its first knockout victory.
All of Canada’s World Cup wins and all of its World Cup points came in 2026. Nine of the country’s 11 World Cup goals — about 82% — were also scored at the home tournament.

From 1986 Debutants to a 2026 Knockout Team
Canada’s three World Cups form a clear progression.
- In 1986, reaching the tournament was the milestone.
- In 2022, scoring the country’s first World Cup goal was the milestone.
- In 2026, Canada finally added points, victories and knockout football.
The final numbers are still modest compared with traditional World Cup powers: 11 matches, two wins, one draw, eight defeats, 11 goals scored and 18 conceded.
But almost the entire positive side of that record was rewritten in 2026.
Canada entered its home tournament without a World Cup point. It left with a first draw, two wins, a first knockout victory and a Round of 16 finish. For a national team whose first six tournament matches produced six defeats, that is the clearest measure of how much changed between Mexico 1986 and North America 2026.
