Premier League 2026/27: Trip to Liverpool will test Arsenal’s title credentials

History may ultimately show that Premier League Matchdays 8 and 9 were pivotal in shaping the outcome of the 2026/27 title race.

Arsenal took full advantage of Manchester City’s first league defeat of the season on Saturday to draw level on points with them at the top of the table.

However, the Gunners’ upcoming trip to Liverpool on November 1 may put a different complexion on the battle for the title.

Clinical Arsenal will be tough to stop

Man City’s 2-1 defeat at Aston Villa handed Arsenal the chance to move level with their title rivals and they did not pass up the opportunity.

Mikel Arteta’s side outclassed Everton at the Emirates Stadium, with goals by Ezri Konsa and Gabriel Magalhaes securing a comfortable 2-0 win.

Arsenal’s tally of five goals conceded in eight games is the best record in the Premier League, and their defensive solidity could be the difference-maker this term. The latest soccer betting odds have Arsenal as 2/5 favourites defend their title, but there is still a long way to go and challenges to overcome.

However, the Gunners’ visit to Liverpool on Sunday will undoubtedly provide a more useful yardstick of their title credentials.

Liverpool are unbeaten in their last four league meetings with Arsenal (W1, D3) and will fancy their chances of enhancing that record this weekend.

A victory for Liverpool would leave them just three points behind Arsenal, highlighting the importance of the fixture.

Liverpool start to flex their muscles

Liverpool claimed their first home Premier League win of the season thanks to an impressive performance against in-form Brighton & Hove Albion.

Andoni Iraola’s side are starting to build momentum, scoring 14 goals in four games since their 3-0 home defeat against Man City earlier this month.

Alexander Isak bagged Liverpool’s second goal against Brighton to take his league tally to six for the season. Only City’s Erling Braut Haaland (nine) has scored more.

If the Swedish international continues in the same vein, the Reds could feasibly mount a sustained bid to win the title this season.

Sunday’s fixture against Arsenal is a chance to show that are genuine contenders, but winning the game will be easier said than done.

Liverpool seem to be heading in the right direction after a sticky start to the season. The clash with Arsenal will demonstrate whether they are.

Man City handed a wake-up call

Nicolas Jackson’s excellent double for Villa ended City’s perfect start to the Premier League season. The result could have significant long-term consequences.

Despite their strong start to the new campaign, Enzo Maresca’s side have shown some defensive vulnerabilities this term.

John McGinn made Marc Guehi look silly when dispossessing him as Villa opened the scoring, while Gianluigi Donnarumma should have saved Jackson’s second strike.

City have now kept only one clean sheet in their past six games and opponents are increasingly looking like they can cause them problems.

Only Manchester United (1.18 in 1999/00 and 1.16 in 1996/97) and have won the Premier League title with a goals against rate worse than Man City’s current 1.13 per game.

Maresca acknowledged after the game that he needs to find a solution to the problem. That needs to happen sooner rather than later.

The final word

City are awaiting the outcome of their 114 financial charges case against the Premier League, which is casting a shadow over the title race.

However, with the final verdict yet to be delivered, City remain in the title race. Unfortunately for them, their leaky defence could scupper their hopes of claiming top spot.

Arsenal are worthy favourites. If they avoid defeat at Liverpool this weekend, it would be foolish to back against them defending the title.
