These points accumulate over the season and the team with the most points are acclaimed as champions while the bottom three teams in the division are relegated to the Championship; the second tier in England. On the other hand, the top two teams and the play-off winners in the Championship are promoted to the Premier League.

Since the competition began, there have been six different champions; Manchester United (13 times), Chelsea (five), Arsenal (three), Manchester City (three),  Blackburn Rovers (once) and Leicester City (once).

2019 Premier League statistics.

The 2018-19 season is more competitive than ever. The campaign is heading towards its exciting climax with the teams having 12 gamesor less to play.

Liverpool returned to the top of the table after a confident win against  AFC Bournemouth on Saturday 9 February. The following day, Manchester City were restored to top spot with their resounding 6-0 win against Chelsea. This begs the question can City win the title the second time in a row, will the Reds win the trophy for the first time or can Tottenham Hotspur comefrom behind to become the third London club to take the prize?

Last season after only 16 games , it was clear that City were going to win their third Premier League title as, by mid-December, they were 11 points clear. However, this season is a totally different due to the stiff competition they are facing, especially from the Reds.

Prior to this season, Liverpool had only previously been top of the Premiere League table after 16 games in the 1996-1997 season. As they are still firmly in contention after ten more games this season, this is clearly their best chance to win the title.

Here is a look at the Reds best performances after 16 games of a top-flight season.

Season Games Points accumulated Final position
2018-2019 16 42
1990-1991 16 41 2nd
1987-1988 16 40 1st

Currently, the Anfield club have taken a total of 65 points from their 26 games. City are also on 65 points but played one more game.

With both teams contining to perform to such an incredible standard, it is quite possible that Liverpool will have to reach the 100-point mark to secure their long-awaited reward.
