The competitive nature of football lends itself perfectly to the eSports arena – a point demonstrated by the number of high-profile tournaments that now take place around the world.
With that in mind, we take a closer look at three eSports football events scheduled to take place in 2023 which will spark plenty of excitement across the sector.
EA Sports Cup
Electronic Arts (EA) introduced a brand new EA Sports Cup competition for the 2022/23 season and it has got off to an extremely encouraging start.
Players representing some of the world’s top eSports organisations and professional football clubs have been competing in 2v2 competition since October.
Manchester City were amongst the clubs that featured in the group phase, but things did not go to plan for the Premier League giants.
They drew five and lost three of their eight matches to finish bottom of Group D. PSG eSports were in the same group and finished second behind FOKUS.
The other groups winners were Complexity Gaming, Riders and RBLZ GAMING, all of whom will have their sights set on winning the competition.
The final stage of the EA Sports Cup will be played on January 16-23, with the event determining an outright champion and which two teams advance to the FIFAe Club World Cup 2023.
eChampions League
This season’s eChampions League (eCL) offers top-class players in Europe the opportunity to compete for a prize pool of more than $280,000.
The eCL Finals will take place during the week of the 2023 Champions League final in Istanbul, Turkey, in early June. Odds will be available on GGBET throughout the event.
Online qualifiers were staged in November across four European regions – West, Iberia & Benelux, Germany & Austria and Nordics & East.
The top 16 players per region advance to the eCL group stage which is scheduled to take place in London during February.
The field will be narrowed down to 32 players who will compete in the knockout phase in the English capital towards the end of April.
A double elimination bracket of the top 16 players will then battle for one of the prestigious eight places at the eCL Finals in Turkey.
FIFAe Club World Cup
Following the success of the FIFAe Club World Cup earlier this year, an expanded event will take place for the 2022/23 season.
Hundreds of clubs from dozens of nations participated in the series last season, highlighting the global appeal of eSports.
The competition features traditional football clubs with dedicated eSports teams, endemic eSports clubs and community eSports teams.
Qualifying events are used to whittle the field down with players embarking on a path that they hope will lead to a share of the bumper prize pool.
Players compete online in three-week-long formats which are designed to reward consistency and final standing in a divisional/conference system.
The top clubs from this stage will make it to the FIFAe Club Play-offs, where they will go head-to-head for one of the final 22 places available.
