Gordon Banks’ ‘Century Save’ from Pelé, 1970

The holders England faced eventual champions Brazil in the 1970 World Cup group stages, with keeper Gordon Banks making a save against Pelé. The Brazilian legend’s downward header seemed headed for the side netting until Banks performed a spectacular stop sliding away to his right. No save has ever been more lauded in England, and Banks’ diving save is sometimes considered to be the “save of the century.” England was defeated 1-0.

‘Hand Of God,’ by Diego Maradona, 1986

A weak interception in this match between Argentina and England rolled the ball invitingly up into the air for goalie Paul Shilton and the Argentinian prodigy Maradona. Diego won the ball first and punched it into the net with his hand. Despite the England players’ protests, the official had not witnessed the event and the goal remained. Maradona subsequently scored his famous wonder goal, and Argentina went on to win the World Cup against West Germany.
