The life and career of Teddy Sheringham

In terms of Millwall celebrities, there’s almost nobody as fondly remembered as Teddy Sheringham. He remains the second most prolific goal scorer in Millwall’s history and even received an MBE for his services to sport. Although Teddy isn’t seen on the pitch nowadays, he had such a fascinating life and career that it’s well worth looking back on what he achieved.

Time at Millwall

Teddy Sheringham’s football career really began when he was signed to Millwall in 1983. At the age of just 16, he initially played for the youth team, but after showing his impressive goal-scoring abilities he quickly became part of their first team. He would remain with Millwall until 1991, scoring more than one hundred goals over his career there. Of course, it wouldn’t be long before the world recognized Sheringham’s obvious skills and the team were made an offer that they couldn’t refuse.

Forest, Tottenham and Manchester United

He left to join Nottingham Forest, a first-division team in 1991, for a reported £2 million. It was here that he scored Nottingham Forest’s first-ever Premiership goal. The match was in 1992 and was also the first ever goal that was shown live on Sky Sports – quite the moment in history. Despite his history-making moments with the team he didn’t stay at Forest for long, but was bought by Tottenham Hotspur for £2.1 million. In his first season there he was the top goal scorer in the Premier League and spent five seasons with the team.

After this, he was signed by Manchester United for £3.5 million and arguably reached the peak of his career. He was on the winning team for three Premiership titles, an FA Cup, a UEFA League win, an Intercontinental Cup, and the FA Charity Shield. He scored several decisive goals in these matches, too, solidifying his place as one of the most valuable players on the team.

The wind down

After his success with Manchester United, Sheringham returned to Tottenham and spent a while with West Ham as well. He never quite reached the dizzy heights of his previous form again and switched to managing before retiring altogether. Never one to rest on his laurels, Sheringham sought new ways to keep his competitive edge sharp. Poker playing was an interesting new path that Sheringham began on in 2008. Teddy Sheringham is no fish in poker either. Whilst some football players shot instantly to poker fame, Sheringham worked his way up and has more than $300,000 in live tournament winnings. He even made the final table in one of the EPT main events, no mean feat even for a full-time professional.

As well as an impressive post-retirement poker career, Sheringham also turned his hand to music. He competed in the first-ever British series of The Masked Singer back in 2020. He’s got a much better voice than anybody expected and the unveiling of him from his tree outfit was a moment of comedy gold that’s unlikely to be forgotten any time soon.
