After Forest completed a first league double over West Ham in 41 years, manager Nuno Espirito Santo claimed his team’s involvement in the race was massive.
“I think since the beginning of the season we wanted to be in this fight,” he said. “We achieved it – the last game at the City Ground will be huge for us and we are trying to make something magical.”
Forest were almost denied the chance to return to the top table in Europe after West Ham nearly snatched a point in the 11th minute of stoppage time.
Goalkeeper Matz Sels tipped a Niclas Fullkrug header over the crossbar and Nuno’s side eventually got over the line to secure a vital win.
They now face another stern test at the City Ground against a Chelsea side which has plenty to look forward to over the next couple of weeks.
The Blues head into the game knowing that a victory will guarantee a top five finish unless Villa defeat Man United by double digits at Old Trafford.
Enzo Maresca’s side briefly threatened to challenge for the title in the run-up to Christmas before reality set in, but qualifying for the Champions League would be an excellent consolation prize.
Maresca has not endeared himself to many Chelsea fans due to his pragmatic style of play, but returning the club to the top table in Europe would be vindication for his methods.
Chelsea are also scheduled to face Real Betis in the final of the Europa Conference League next week, so could feasibly have plenty to celebrate before the end of May.
Maresca believes his team has shown they can handle the pressure of playing in big games and says they will concentrate on the job at hand rather than worrying about other teams.
“The focus has been on us because we knew that winning both games means we finish well,’ Maresca said.
“We won tonight, now it’s not about pressure or anyone else. It’s about us again. We need to be focused, prepare for the game in the best way, and try to win the last game.”
Chelsea are the bookmakers’ favourites to win at Forest, but it would be foolish to underestimate the home side’s chances of upsetting the odds.
However, the Blues are narrowly fancied to edge what promises to be a tense contest.
