Nations League 2024/25 Finals Preview

Germany

Germany finished top of Group A3, before defeating Italy in the quarter-finals.

  • Germany 5-0 Hungary
  • Netherlands 2-2 Germany
  • Bosnia and Herzegovina 1-2 Germany
  • Germany 1-0 Netherlands
  • Germany 7-0 Bosnia and Herzegovina
  • Hungary 1-1 Germany
  • Italy 1-2 Germany
  • Germany 3-3 Italy (aggregate 5-4)

Germany have reached the semi-finals without losing a game and will be confident about their chances of claiming the title on home soil.

Their best performance was against Italy in the first leg of the quarter-final, with goals by Tim Kleindienst and Leon Goretzka sealing a 2-1 win in Milan.

They were given a fright in the reverse fixture as Italy battled back from a 3-0 first-half deficit to level on the night in stoppage time.

However, Germany saw out the game to win 5-4 on aggregate and will be tough to beat with home advantage.

Portugal

Portugal claimed top spot in Group A1, but needed extra-time to see off Denmark in their quarter-final.

  • Portugal 2-1 Croatia
  • Portugal 2-1 Scotland
  • Poland 1-3 Portugal
  • Scotland 0-0 Portugal
  • Portugal 5-1 Poland
  • Croatia 1-1 Portugal
  • Denmark 1-0 Portugal
  • Portugal 5-2 Denmark (aggregate 5-3 aet)

Portugal won four and drew two of their group games to finish six points clear of Croatia at the top of the standings.

A five-goal second-half blitz against Poland on Matchday 5 wrapped up qualification with a game to spare and underlined their attacking potential.

They also hit Denmark for five in the second leg of their quarter-final tie, although they were taken to extra time on that occasion.

Manager Roberto Martinez has got Portugal playing well, but whether they will be good enough to get past Germany in Munich is debatable.

Spain

After being held by Serbia in their opening game, Spain rattled off five straight wins in Group A4. They needed penalties to beat Netherlands in the quarter-finals.

  • Serbia 0-0 Spain
  • Switzerland 1-4 Spain
  • Spain 1-0 Denmark
  • Spain 3-0 Serbia
  • Denmark 1-2 Spain
  • Spain 3-2 Switzerland
  • Netherlands 2-2 Spain
  • Spain 3-3 Netherlands (aggregate 5-5, 5-4 pens)

Spain ended the group stage with 16 points – the most of any team – and the joint-best defensive record with only four goals conceded.

They looked shaky at the back in their quarter-final tie against the Netherlands, but eventually got the job done in the penalty shoot-out.

The reigning Nations League champions showcased their tournament credentials by winning the 2024 European Championship title in Germany last summer.

Manager Luis de la Fuente’s track record of success at junior and senior level in international football will make Spain a tough nut to crack as they strive to defend their crown.

France

France shook off the disappointment of losing their opening game to finish top of Group A2. They were taken to a penalty shoot-out by Croatia in the quarter-final.

  • France 1-3 Italy
  • France 2-0 Belgium
  • Israel 1-4 France
  • Belgium 1-2 France
  • France 0-0 Israel
  • Italy 1-3 France
  • Croatia 2-0 France
  • France 2-0 Croatia (aggregate 2-2, 5-4 pens)

France’s impressive 3-1 victory over Italy in their final group ensured they secured top spot and a quarter-final showdown with Croatia.

A 2-0 defeat in the first leg put them on the back foot, but they battled back to eventually claim a semi-final berth after a penalty shoot-out.

Manager Didier Deschamps is heading into his final year in charge of Les Bleus and will be keen to end his time in charge by clinching more silverware.

However, Spain defeated France 2-1 in the Euro 2024 semi-finals and a similar outcome could be on the cards this time around.
