The promotion favourites were still reeling from the shock resignation of manager David Hodgson ten days earlier. Darlington soon put their off-field problems behind them though as they raced into an early lead on the opening day. Glenn Naylor's early run and cross set up an easy chance for Lee Nogan to score. The Quakers were to create only one more clear cut chance while Dale recorded 22 attempts on goal. They were rewarded with a Davies penalty after Paul Heckingbottom brought down Paul Ware. Referee Cooper also showed seven yellow cards in a keenly fought contest.
