For the fifth time in seven 2000-01 Division Three outings, Hull City took the lead but were unable to hold on for their first League win of the season. Three days after their first win of the new term with the five goal drubbing of Halifax, Mansfield Town were soon on the back foot as City once again defied their bottom two placing. In a cup-tie atmosphere, Hull looked more menacing in front of goal despite the Stags scoring nine in their last two home games. Mansfield finally made some impact in midfield as the second half progressed, only to see the Tigers take the lead. Former Stag Steve Harper's free-kick was laid back by Clint Marcelle for David Brightwell's fierce right-foot drive from 15 yards to be deflected over Bobby Mimms. Hull held on to the advantage for nine minutes. From Chris Greenacre's turn and pass, sub Darrell Clarke - back from suspension - drove a low 12 yard shot into the bottom corner for his fourth of the season. City weren't finished though and Brian Little's team would have gained the maximum reward but for two stunning stoppage time saves from Mimms.
