Lincoln boss Phil Stant admitted that his Imps were second best in the first half and it wasn't until the Southend defence was breached after an hour that the home team held the upper hand. Typically, City broke the deadlock from a corner. A left wing inswinger was met at the far post by Steve Holmes to leave Paul Smith to volley home from six yards. The Imps repeated their familiar formula four minutes later, except the flag kick came in from the right and the finishing touch was provided by Gavin Gordon for his first goal of the season. United were now a well beaten team, and Holmes compounded their misery in the last minute. His fierce penalty - awarded when Paul Mayo was tripped by Leo Roget - beat Andy Woodman for the centre-back's fourth goal in 2000-01. Roget and Martin Carruthers were guilty of costly misses during the visiting Shrimpers lengthy spell on top.
