Despite having an attempts on goal advantage of 14 to 5 and winning on corners by a 8-1 margin, Lincoln City opened their 2000/01 campaign with a home defeat. Hartlepool overcame their disappointment of missing out on promotion in the Play-Offs with Lee Fitzpatrick's brace earning the morale boosting success. Former Imps striker Tony Lormor engineered the first as his cross caused mayhem in the City area. Any Lincoln hopes of salvaging a point were finally extinguised in the last minute when Fitzpatrick curled a superb shot into the top corner from the edge of the box.

Comments:

With John Reames stepping down to resume the orthodox chairman's role, the opening day fixture marked Phil Stant's first game in charge of the Imps. He paraded new signings Dave Cameron, Justin Walker and Richard Logan

Comments:

Hartlepool fielded debutants in new signing Tony Lormor, Coventry City loanee Barry Ferguson and trialist James Sharp. Lee Fitzpatrick had only scored twice in his previous 26 first team appearances. Lormor was erroneously credited with the first goal in some newspapers.
