League Cup 2024/25 – Quarter-final preview

Arsenal are the bookies’ favourites to lift the trophy and they will fancy their chances of making progress after being handed a home tie against Crystal Palace.

The Gunners have breezed into the quarter-finals after comfortably defeating Bolton Wanderers and Preston North End in the previous two rounds.

Palace have beaten Norwich City, Queens Park Rangers and Aston Villa to reach the last eight, but will likely have their work cut out against Arsenal.

Arsenal have triumphed in each of their last four meetings with Palace and look a good bet to secure a place in the semi-finals.

Liverpool are also expected to make through to the last four after being paired with Southampton. The Reds have been in fine form this season and will be tough to beat.

Arne Slot’s side have knocked out West Ham United and Brighton & Hove Albion to reach the quarter-finals and should have too much class for the Saints.

Russell Martin’s side have beaten Cardiff City, Everton and Stoke City on their way to this stage of the competition, but their run will probably end against Liverpool.

Newcastle United are the third favourites in the outright betting after being drawn to face Brentford at St James’ Park.

The Magpies have defeated Nottingham Forest, AFC Wimbledon and Chelsea to reach the quarter-finals, but would be well advised not to underestimate the Bees.

Thomas Frank’s side have eased past Colchester United, Leyton Orient and Sheffield United to book their place in the last eight of the competition.

They defeated Newcastle 4-2 in their most recent Premier League encounter and could upset the odds in the north east.

The final tie between Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United is a battle of two of the Premier League’s biggest underachievers.

Tottenham have beaten Coventry City and Manchester City to reach the quarter-finals, but their recent performances have a left a lot to be desired.

The Red Devils have swept past Barnsley and Leicester to progress to the last eight, but it would be a brave move to back them to win at Tottenham given their current form.

A penalty shoot-out after a tight encounter is the most likely outcome and home advantage may help Tottenham scramble though to the semi-finals.
