Euros Round of 16 predictions

The group stage of Euro 2020 has now been completed and the draw for the round of 16 is set. From here, each of the remaining nations know their route to the final.

None of the major nations have fallen at this point, though three of the 11 hosts have been eliminated – Russia, Scotland and Hungary.

Here’s a look at the second-round matches:

Belgium vs Portugal

Two of the pre-tournament favourites meet as early as the round of 16. Belgium took a maximum nine points in their group, with Romelu Lukaku in form up front. Portugal never looked in danger of being eliminated but did finish third in the group of death.

Neither defence has particularly excelled in the opening round but we’re edging with Belgium to progress from this tie. This despite the Red Devils being all the way back at 9/1 to win the tournament now. If you’re confident Kevin De Bruyne and co can pull it off, then they can be backed with Ladbrokes promotion codes to boost your winnings.

Italy vs Austria

The Italians are one of just two nations yet to concede a single goal in the finals and they have looked very impressive en route. Roberto Mancini’s side are now being considered genuine contenders.

With a strong defence and a number of goalscorers in attack they shouldn’t have a problem seeing off a below par Austrian side. Belgium or Portugal awaits in the quarter-finals.

France vs Switzerland

Didier Deschamps’ world champions still haven’t got out of second gear but won Group F despite drawing their last two games, versus Hungary and Portugal.

France have a favourable tie to progress to the final eight and with the likes of Kylian Mbappe, Antoine Griezmann and Karim Benzema all capable of upping their games in front of goal, there shouldn’t be any slip ups here.

Croatia vs Spain

Completing the top half of the draw is a Croatia side who look a shadow of the team that reached the World Cup final three years ago, versus a Spain side that look like a shadow of themselves that were dominating football a decade ago.

Spain beat Slovakia 5-0 in their final group game after struggling in front of goal in their first two. That gives them the momentum heading into this tie.

Sweden vs Ukraine

Ukraine put two past both Netherlands and North Macedonia in the group stage but it’s their defence that will be their achilles heel moving forward. Sweden topped their group by scoring the same number of goals, which included a 0-0 draw with Spain.

Tactically, you have to favour Sweden in this one, but they have been reliant on Emil Forsberg for their goals.

England vs Germany

England have failed to impress in their opening three matches at Euro 2020 but have reached the knockout stages without conceding a single goal.

Whilst the Three Lions had a favourable group, Germany finished in between France and Portugal in theirs – the defending champions and the world champions. Joachim Low’s side are already battle-tested and should pull off another victory at Wembley Stadium.

Netherlands vs Czech Republic

Netherlands have arguably not looked as good as their nine points and eight goals suggest. They certainly look open at the back too, so when they come up against a good attack, we would expect to see their tournament come to an end.

Czech Republic probably aren’t that side to pull off the victory, but their odds are longer than they deserve to be. We can’t rule out an upset in this one but are leaning towards Frank de Boer’s Oranje.

Wales vs Denmark

Denmark progressed despite losing their first two games, whilst Wales are looking to at least match their performance from five years ago when they reached the semi-finals.

Robert Page’s side are slight favourites in their second-round tie and probably deserve to be by having more individual match winners in their side.
