The England players who are in danger of missing out on Russia 2018

It’s getting to that stage of the season now where the summer is on everybody’s mind, not least Gareth Southgate. The likes of Theo Walcott, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Daniel Sturridge have all moved clubs to give themselves a chance of boarding the plane.

It could be argued a couple more should be pushing harder to find form too. With just a few months of the season left, a number of stars are in danger of missing out. We take a look at those that could face the chop from Southgate’s final 23 man squad…

Joe Hart

Joe Hart’s career is in real turmoil. Dropped from Manchester City, he was sent on loan to West Ham and has since been dropped by them. He’s made a number of mistakes and while it’s probably a safe bet he’s no longer England’s number one, he could end up not making the squad at all.

A number of World Cup betting tips are suggesting to back the likes of Tom Heaton, Fraser Forster or Tom Pope to go instead of Hart, but he may just be saved on experience alone.

He’s not playing though and Southgate has in the past suggested he’ll only pick players who are seeing action. Hart will be getting nervous…

Marcus Rashford

He may be one of the best prospects in English football but since the arrival of Alexis Sanchez he’s fallen down the pecking order at United. He’s scored just four in 25 Premier League appearances this season and has started just one of United’s last nine league games.

He hasn’t scored in the league since December either. So questions can legitimately be asked. Of course, we’d love to see him there and we hope he gets plenty of action from now until the end of the season.

Daniel Sturridge

Daniel Sturridge has probably done the right thing by moving away from Liverpool on loan. He now finds himself in a relegation scrap with West Brom. It could go either way for the once lethal striker but if he starts scoring he has every chance.

Whether that’ll happen is another story. For the most part West Brom will be battling in games, not dominating possession and creating dozens of chances. The opportunities he does get, he needs to take. He’s 5/1 to board the plane and it’ll be interesting to see how the rest of his season develops at The Hawthorns.

Danny Welbeck

Another striker who is out of favour is Danny Welbeck. He’s made just seven starts in the league this season and had a number of injury worries. The arrival of Pierre Emerick Aubameyang isn’t helping his cause for a place in the starting 11 and he’s in real danger of seeing his career fall stagnant.

That would mean missing out on the World Cup and unfortunately we can really see this happening. He does have a great record for the Three Lions however, and he’ll be hoping that reputation may help him out.
