Champions League – Last-16 preview

Fixtures between Madrid and Atletico are always fiercely fought affairs and their upcoming last-16 clash is unlikely to be any different.

After missing out on a top-eight finish during the league phase of the competition, Madrid landed in the knockout play-off round.

They were paired with Premier League big guns Manchester City, but secured an impressive 6-3 aggregate victory to progress to the next stage.

Atletico won six of their eight matches during the opening phase of the competition and will fancy their chances of knocking out their local rivals.

However, Madrid’s uncanny knack of finding a way to win in the Champions League could give them the edge in what promises to be a thrilling tie.

Liverpool’s reward for topping the standings during the league phase is a tricky encounter with Ligue 1 giants Paris Saint-Germain.

The Premier League outfit recorded seven wins in eight games to reach the last-16, but are unlikely to have things their own way when they face PSG.

The French side progressed to the last-16 courtesy of a 10-0 aggregate victory over Brest and they could be a good bet to upset the odds against Liverpool.

Another blockbuster last-16 clash sees Bundesliga rivals Bayern Munich and Bayer Leverkusen go head-to-head in an intriguing tie.

Bayern eventually navigated their way past Celtic in their play-off, but the manner of their performance in the second leg left a lot to be desired.

Leverkusen are unbeaten in three league and cup meetings with Bayern this season and will be confident about securing a place in the quarter-finals.

Arsenal are also expected to progress to the next round, but would be well advised not to underestimate PSV Eindhoven in their last-16 tie.

The Gunners’ failure to sign a striker in the winter transfer window has ruined their hopes of winning the Premier League title and they could suffer a similar fate in Europe.

PSC defeated Juventus to reach this stage of the competition and have the ability to make life difficult for the Gunners over their two meetings.

Aston Villa are fancied to navigate their way past Club Brugge, while Inter Milan are impossible to oppose against Feyenoord.

Borussia Dortmund are strongly fancied to defeat Lille over two legs and they should be joined in the last eight by Barcelona, who may be too strong for Benfica.
