If you head back to last year’s competition, then you would have seen the result that saw Real Madrid be beaten at home against Moldovan minnows Sheriff Tiraspol in September 2021; something many who were betting on the game with Betway at the time would have found very difficult to foresee happening. In 2009, FC Barcelona were on one of their most surprising defeats in the UEFA Champions League as they were beaten at the Camp Nou by Russian outfit Rubin Kazan. The Russians shocked a side that featured a plethora of superstars and arguably the greatest manager of the modern era in Pep Guardiola, thus emphasizing just how big of a shock this result was.
Celtic 2-1 FC Barcelona – 2012
Barcelona, in truth, have had their fair share of shock defeats in the competition, with the club having suffered a surprise loss against Celtic back in 2012. The Scottish side had only 16% of the ball throughout the entire game, but clearly made it work in their favor as they managed to convert the chances they had when they needed to.
BATE Borisov 3-1 Bayern Munich – 2012
2012 was a year of shocks, as Bayern Munich also received a nasty crash to reality after they were beaten in Belarus by lowly BATE Borisov despite having fielded a number of quality players in their team. However, much in the same way Real Madrid bounced back last year, the Germans did go on to win the tournament that year, having lost in the Final the year before to Chelsea on penalties.
