While Liverpool almost certainly ran off with the league title, there’s still plenty left to play for the rest of the Premier League. The pack running a race for Europe sitting at positions between 4th and 11th place are separated by mere 8 points. European qualifications are a road to recognition and more money for PL clubs especially those that qualify for the Champions League.
At the moment, it would appear that Liverpool and Arsenal have their CL spots secured, while the third placed Nottingham Forest also looks poised to return to Champions League after being absent for more than four decades. Another team worth watching is Bournemouth, as they not only play a nice kind of football but are also in position to qualify for Europe for the first time ever. Brighton also has high aspirations this year as a CL spot would be a dream come through for their fans, while Manchester City, despite all the struggles of the 2024/25 season aim for their 14th consecutive Champions League appearance.
How Can English Teams Reach Europe Through Domestic & International Competitions?
Just as all of us are used to, the top four teams qualify for the Champions league directly. This year, if things go right in Europe for the remaining English teams, even the 5th placed team could go to CL instead of the Europa League. For this to be true we need to wait for the season to end and see the UEFA decision on the matter. The way things stand now, and if you’re a risk taker who knows a thing or two about the Premier League football picks and predictions, making a bet that there will be six PL teams in the CL wouldn’t be unwise.
If this scenario unfolds, the team that lands on the position No6 would land a direct spot in the Europa League. Another path to the coveted Europa League competition can be attained by winning the FA Cup. It also holds a direct path to the EL, while the EFL Cup winners, Newcastle, have secured a playoff spot for the 2025/26 Conference League. What makes this year so interesting in the PL, is the fact that there are plenty of permutations that could lead as many as 11 teams from England to Europe.
The best example of this is by taking Newcastle into account. So, the Magpies have the EFL Cup and hold a spot in the Conference League. If they finish in the spots that lead to the group stages of CL or El, their Conference League spot will be given to the first team in the table that hasn’t secured a spot in Europe.
Champions League 5th Spot – How?
Most of you already know that this year’s Champions League marks the first year of the new format. Instead of 32 teams the competition now has 32 teams. Because of this, UEFA has promised two extra CL spots to leagues across Europe. Now, these spots do not come to you without merit. To get one, a team needs to rank at one of the top two positions on the yearly table of coefficients released by UEFA. The coefficient for this table is collected by performing well in the UEFA competitions. So, for a nation to get an additional CL spot all of their teams need to collect points across the three UEFAs competitions.
At the moment of writing of this article the top two spots belong to England and Spain. If nothing changes come the year end, La Liga and Premier League will both have five Champions League spots. Interestingly enough, even after one of the worst seasons in Pep Guardiola’s career he could get to the Champions League without too much sweat.
While a top 5 finish is not easy to achieve, this year, one could do worse and still end up in the CL. How? The way things stand now, we could witness seven English teams participating in the 2025/26 Champions League. For that development of events, the following needs to happen:
– England having 5 spots given to the PL by UEFA.
– Having an PL team win the Champions League but finishing the year outside the top 5: we’re looking at you Aston Villa.
– Either Tottenham Hotspur or Manchester United winning Europa League but finishing outside the top 5 which is most likely considering they’re currently sitting in the bottom half of the league.
If all of these scenarios come to fruition we will be looking at 10 English teams going out to Europe. By this match we would have 7 PL teams in the Champions League, two in the Europa League (FA Cup winner and the team from position No6), and a single team in the Conference League from the EFL Cup.
How About 11?
While highly unlikely to happen, we’re not too far from this scenario. In a certain, unlikely, set of events, we could see eleven teams from the English Premier League having secured spots in Europe. This is what needs to happen in no particular order:
* Top five teams need to be Manchester City, Newcastle, Nottingham Forest, Arsenal and Liverpool.
* In what would be a surprise of the decade, Aston Villa would have to win the Champions League and finish in the spot No6 for England to have 11 European spots.
* Another hard task lies in the fact that either the Spurs or the Red Devils need to win the Europa League and to wind up somewhere between spots 6 and 10 (the latter appears to be less likely by the day than the former).
* None of the teams above can win the FA Cup if the 11th spot is to open an EU spot.
* A team either winning an European Competition nor any of the domestic cups should enter the top ten in the PL.
* Chelsea needs to wrap up the Conference League and to finish in any spot between 6th and 10th. Considering they’re gearing for a top four finish this is another less likely scenario.
If all of this plays out, the PL would have seven teams in the CL, three in the EL, and one in the Conference. Would you bet a few bucks on this on Stake.com? We know we would.
Which Teams Are in The Run for European Spots?
The 2024/25 Premier League season is far from over, especially for those teams who are still looking to secure their participation in the European competitions for the next season through the PL. So, which teams are hoping to get there, even if the number of slots is less than eleven. Here they are:
Liverpool
With nine more games to go, one thing is sure, Liverpool will be playing in the Champions League next year. They will also lift the PL title, if nothing unprecedented doesn’t happen. Mo Salah & Co have been playing extraordinary the entire year in 29 matches so far, and with only one loss they more than deserve to lift the trophy.
Arsenal
Early in the year, those close to the world of online sports betting knew that the top three teams competing for the title were going to be Arsenal, Liverpool, and Manchester City. Once again, Arsenal is going to finish the year as the second placed team. Mikel Arteta and his boys have a lot of identity, and while they’re defensively quite solid, they truly lack that true No9 upfront to wrap up games where they’re behind or circling around the box without the ability to score. If they address that matter in the summer by acquiring Victor Osimeh or Alexander Isak, they could finally end their title drought.
Nottingham Forest
Forest is having a dream season and it’s all thanks to Nuno Espirito Santo who lifted this team from relegation strugglers to the top of the PL. For a tad bit they were even contending for the title. In reality they were always aiming for a CL spot from the moment it looked that their good form is not just a fluke but that a team having Morgan Gibbs-White, Callum Hudson-Odoi, Chris Wood, Nikola Milenkovic, Danilo, and Anthony Elanga has some relay quality and depth. Forets is currently third, and if anything weird doesn’t happen they will wrap up the year in that spot.
City & Chelsea
Big teams, both top teams in Europe and in England, Big six members, and trophy hunters on the highest level. One is a team in transition, Chelsea, looking to get back in the CL, while the other, Manchester City, look to save their year by getting a top 5 finish and securing Champions League once more. At one point Chelsea appeared to be closing the gap on Liverpool, but their drop in form saw them looking back at the teams jeopardizing their position in the table. CL is almost a must but it will take some luck and getting back to top form to secure it for Chelsea. As far as City is concerned, this is their worst year under Pep Guardiola and anything less than CL qualifications would be a disaster. Both teams sit at the CL spots at the moment.
Newcastle
The Magpies have won the EFL Cup and their place in Europe is secured. Yet, the Champions League is still a major possibility. After all, there’s only four points between the 8th place Fulham and the 4th place Chelsea. As far as Newcastle goes, they are 6th with 47 points and with a CL spot right there for the grabbing. After winning their first trophy in more than a half a century, Newcastle United will be highly motivated to get that CL spot too.
Brighton & Fulham
These are teams that have dared to dream. Fulham is at position No8 with 45 points, 4 less than the 4th place Chelsea, while Brighton is at position No7, with 47 points. Both teams are right there with high aspirations and even prettier kinds of football. While one could argue that these teams deserve to be in the CL for the first time in their history, their chances are slim at the moment. For one, the competition is fierce as ever, and secondly they lack the experience to wrap up the year in the right way. Fulham is a team with a more experienced coach and squad and we can see them finish even higher than Brighton come the year end. As far as Europe is concerned in general, we’re sure these teams will play there at least in the Conference League.
Aston Villa
Will has slipped down in recent weeks as far as the PL table is concerned, but they’re one of the two English teams still competing in the Champions League. Unai Emery will be looking to go as far as possible in the CL, while rising up in the table in the PL. They’re also active in the FA Cup, and together with Manchester City are one of the favorites to win it. So, as far as Europe goes, Villa will have its place there come the year end, but whether it will be CL or not, remains to be seen.
Bournemouth
Last but not least, Bournemouth is gearing up for their first European season. Yet, they have plenty of work left to do. Right now the Cherries are at the spot No10, and are experiencing a slight drop in form with only one win in the last five matches. Andoni Iraola has done a great job, the team is kicking above their weight, and if they manage to turn it around in the next few weeks, or to surprise Man City in the FA Cup they could secure their spot in Europe.
Bottom Line
English teams competing in both the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup, Europa League, and Conference League have a chance to make history. If results go their way, and destiny plays a smaller role. We could witness 11 English teams playing European competitions next year. Will it happen? Guess we’ll have to wait for the season to play out.
