Will record-breaker Kane overtake Shearer’s record?

Harry Kane scored his 267th goal for Tottenham Hotspur in Spurs’ recent Premier League win over Manchester City, making him the club’s all-time top goal scorer. After breaking Jimmy Greaves’ Tottenham goal record, the England captain will now set his sights on becoming the Premier League’s all-time top scorer.

How Kane broke Greaves’ record

Kane is still way behind Alan Shearer, who scored a staggering 260 Premier League goals with spells at Blackburn Rovers and Newcastle United. However, the Tottenham No. 10 has time on his side and will fancy his chances of breaking the record. For those looking to place football bets, Kane is priced at 12/1 to win this season’s Golden Boot. As for Spurs in general, you can get 6/4 for Antonio Conte’s men to finish in the top four.

Kane made a strong start to his 2022-23 season, scoring an impressive 13 league and cup goals for Tottenham before the 2022 FIFA World Cup break. While on international duty in Qatar, the England skipper netted in knockout games against Senegal and France.

Kane returned from World Cup action by scoring in Tottenham’s first game back against Brentford on Boxing Day. Goals followed against Crystal Palace and Portsmouth, and the 29-year-old equalled Greaves’ Tottenham tally with the only goal of the game in a 1-0 win at Fulham in late January.

Kane broke the record in fitting style, netting in a 1-0 victory over champions Man City in front of his adoring public at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on February 5th. A typical Kane strike early in the first period won the points for Spurs. Coincidentally, it was also his 200th Premier League goal.

Greaves’ stunning record stood since 1970, and many Spurs greats tried and failed to break the record over the decades. However, there was something special about Kane when he broke onto the scene at White Hart Lane back in 2014, and the Walthamstow-born ace has never looked back.

Can Kane overhaul Shearer’s Premier League record?

England legend Shearer remains the all-time Premier League top goal scorer. In a remarkable 14-year playing career in the Premier League, Shearer scored 260 league goals. The majority of those came for his stint at Newcastle from 1996 to 2006, as he netted 148 times in the league for the Magpies.

Kane still has a way to go to break Shearer’s incredible record, but at just 29, the England star still has time on his side. The Tottenham man will be looking to overhaul Wayne Rooney first. Kane is closing in on Rooney’s 208 Premier League goals and could overtake the former Everton and Manchester United man by the end of this season.

Kane has been an incredible servant to Tottenham since Tim Sherwood gave him his first Premier League start against Sunderland in April 2014. He scored his first Premier League goal in the 59th minute in the 5-1 win over the Black Cats. Kane has gone on to have a glittering career in north London and is showing no signs of letting up.
