Why Liverpool still need more quality to retain title

Liverpool’s first Premier League title has been confirmed in extravagant fashion following an unbelievable season. But, it’s imperative for title-winning sides not to believe that the same will happen the year after if the squad hasn’t been improved.

Bookmakers and online casino sites are already placing Manchester City as the favourites at 11/10 whilst the Reds come in second with quite favourable odds of 9/5.

For Liverpool, this upcoming transfer window could be more important than last year’s and head coach Jurgen Klopp does need to delve into it if this season’s heroics are to be repeated.

When Alberto Moreno moved on last summer, few Liverpool fans cared that much with Scottish international Andrew Robertson entrenching himself as one of the Premier League’s greatest wing-backs. Youngsters Adam Lewis and Ki-Jana Hoever are, however, far from ready to pursue a first-team spot. That, therefore, means that Robertson needs cover.

With the Reds encountering a few injury problems along the backline last season, Klopp must be on the lookout for versatility in case those kind of defensive frailties show again.

An attacking midfielder with flair

Too many times when Liverpool have struggled in recent seasons, Klopp has been unable to call on reinforcements from the bench. Mo Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino are unbelievable players, but if things don’t go their way then the German boss has limited options.

The fact that Manchester City sit top of the goalscoring charts with 93 and the Reds with a mere 77 speaks volumes. Of course, the ridiculous point gap between the two is what matters, but if things are closer next season then goal difference will play a huge part. And, Liverpool are currently behind in that matter.

What Klopp needs is another attacking midfielder to call on. Takumi Minamino was recruited, but he has failed to break any pots since moving whilst Naby Keita has failed to live up to the attacking hype in his two seasons at the club. Fabinho has become one of the league’s most impressive holding midfielders, though Dutchman Georginio Wijnaldum can sometimes impress in front of goal.

And, with Adam Lallana and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain spending months on the sidelines, it would be sensible for Klopp to add to his attacking ranks.

Roberto Firmino is a brilliant striker, but has often been rumoured to be on his way out of Anfield. Even if that doesn’t materialize, the Brazilian still needs cover. Danny Ings and Daniel Sturridge are no longer on the books whilst Rhian Brewster has spent time away on loan. That has left just Divock Origi.

Klopp was reportedly in the market for German figurehead Timo Werner, but his move to Chelsea cancelled out any chance of that happening, despite the fact that odds were as short as 1/3 with casinos français at one stage. If that was the Reds boss’ main target then it will be interesting to see where Klopp and Liverpool go next.
