Hansi Flick’s side traveled to face Sevilla on matchday seven of La Liga, and the hosts were immediately on the front foot. They took the lead through midfielder Youssouf Fofana, but the lead was short-lived. Raphinha dragged the Spanish champions level barely three minutes after falling behind, before netting twice more in the second half to seal his second straight hat trick and hand Barcelona a 3-1 win.
Barcelona’s Spectacular Start to the Season
The triumph extended Barca’s perfect start to the new La Liga season, with the club boasting a perfect seven wins from seven. The Catalonians have amassed a mighty 31 goals in those seven games at an average of over four per game, with 5-0 drubbings of both Elche and Valencia, as well as a 7-2 beatdown of Racing Santander, helping that average no end. Captain Raphinha now has 14 goals in just eight games, with two of them coming in the 4-1 Champions League victory against Feyenoord.
Considering their current form, it should come as no surprise to hear that online betting sites are predicting a clean sweep of silverware for Flick’s men this season. The latest odds from Lucky Rebel Sportsbook currently make Barca an odds-on 4/11 favorite to secure a third straight La Liga crown come next May, as well as a 5/1 favorite to win the Champions League for the first time since 2015.
So, with Barcelona currently unbeatable, it got us thinking: who were the last three teams to actually beat them? Well, wonder no more.
Valencia 3-1 Barcelona — 23rd May
One has to go back over four months for Barcelona’s last defeat. That came on the final day of last season, when Flick fielded a rotated side for the trip to face Valencia as the La Liga title was already long wrapped up. The likes of Gerard Martin, Marc Bernal, Alejandro Balde, Eric Garcia, and Robert Lewandowski were brought into the starting lineup, and it looked as though the Blaugrana would head back to Catalonia with all three points when the legendary Polish striker gave them the lead shortly after the hour mark.
Then, all hell broke loose.
Los Che struck back almost immediately through Javi Guerra, who stole the ball in the opposition half, dribbled past a defender, and finished superbly. Five minutes after that, the hosts were shockingly in front as Luis Rioja lashed home from inside the area.
Barca would press for an equalizer, and goalkeeper Stole Dimitrievski denied the returning Andres Christensen twice with big saves as they chased the equalizer. Then, deep into injury time, Valencia sealed a famous win as midfielder Guido Rodriguez thumped home to put the gloss on a 3-1 victory. Barcelona haven’t lost since and recently gained their revenge for the defeat, hammering their one-time conquerors by five goals to nil on matchday four of the new campaign.
Alaves 1-0 Barcelona — 13th May
Barcelona wrapped up their second straight La Liga title on May 10th when they handily dispatched Real Madrid 2-0 at the Camp Nou thanks to first-half goals from Marcus Rashford and Ferran Torres. Three days later, no doubt with sore heads, the Blaugrana were tasked with going again as they made the journey to face relegation-threatened Alaves. And the freshly crowned champions were in for a rude awakening in the Basque Country.
With the title wrapped up, Flick rotated his starting eleven, with starting roles for Roony Bardighi, Marc Bernal, Marc Casado, and young defender Alvaro Cortes, but the rotation caused too much disruption to Barcelona’s attacking harmony. The Blaugrana looked surprisingly impotent and mustered very few clear-cut opportunities. On the stroke of half-time, the visitors fell behind as striker Ibrahim Diabate poked home from close range, and they never truly looked like equalizing.
The champions would ultimately succumb to a 1-0 defeat, surrendering their 11-game La Liga winning streak with a whimper as they didn’t even manage a single shot on target throughout the 90 minutes.
Barcelona 0-2 Atletico Madrid — 8th April
Barcelona’s most painful defeat, however, came back on April 8th as they met Atletico Madrid in the quarterfinals of the Champions League. Diego Simeone’s men have constantly been a thorn in the side of their Catalan rivals in cup competitions. They dumped Barcelona out in the quarterfinals twice in three seasons back in 2014 and 2016, while just two months prior to this clash, Atleti also thumped the Blaugrana 4-0 in the Copa del Rey.
Flick’s side were the favorites to progress and indeed ultimately go on and lift the trophy. But they would come unstuck at the Camp Nou in disastrous fashion. Young defender Pau Cubarsi was sent off on the stroke of half-time for a professional foul, and current Barca transfer target Julian Alvarez would blast home the resulting free kick to hand the visitors a shock lead. Alexander Sørloth would then double the advantage in the 70th minute, with the big Norwegian striker netting his seventh goal against Barca.
The Spanish champions would win the second leg in the Metropolitano by two goals to one, but they ultimately succumbed to a 4-3 aggregate defeat. Atleti progressed to the semifinals, where they were beaten by Arsenal.
