The revised Club World Cup format has been heavily criticised, with players and coaches arguing it places too many demands on an already packed schedule.

FIFA has inevitably dismissed those claims, and it will be intriguing to see how things unfold when the action gets underway at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami on June 14.

Inter Miami will take on Egyptian side Al-Ahly in the opening match, which will give fans an early look at Argentinian legend Lionel Messi.

Miami’s participation in the tournament has sparked plenty of debate, with FIFA awarding them a place despite their failure to win the Major League Soccer (MLS) play-offs.

An all-European clash between Paris Saint-Germain and Atletico Madrid is the highlight on the second day, before cross-continental fixtures take centre stage.

Fluminense versus Borussia Dortmund will be a heavyweight clash between South America and Europe on June 17 and is one which could keep the match officials busy.

Saudi Pro League (SPL) giants AL-Hilal face Real Madrid the following day and they will be eager to give the five-time world champions a run for their money.

Flamengo vs Chelsea and Bayern Munich vs Boca Juniors should be well worth watching on June 20 and could both create plenty of fireworks.

Al-Hilal are back in action on June 22 against Red Bull Salzburg, and this game could be a more useful yardstick for the current strength of the SPL.

Many critics have dismissed Saudi Arabia as a footballing backwater, but a positive result for Al-Hilal against Salzburg could force them into a rethink.

Atlectico against Botafogo could be another feisty encounter on June 23, while Inter Milan vs River Plate is unlikely to be one for the faint-hearted two days later.

Reigning Club World Cup champions Manchester City round off their group stage fixtures against Juventus on June 26 and they will hope to have secured their place in the last-16 before then.
