Premier League transfer window review

After months of drama in the transfer market, the Premier League transfer window finally closed shut on 8th August to the delight and dismay of the teams involved. In what is a far cry from the European transfer window, which ends on September 1st, the England top-flight has been ending it’s business earlier to make sure nothing happens after the new season has begun.

Mauricio Pochettino recently reiterated his feelings on the window closing earlier being a “mistake”, while Ole Gunnar Solskjaer voiced his relief for it closing quickly, despite not acquiring all his summer targets. Ironically, Manchester United were the highest spenders in the window with £148million being shelled out for only three signings.

Harry Maguire became the most expensive defender ever after being signed for £80 million from Leicester City. This might see an outcry, but considering he outperformed every other United defender last season and how he’s already ushered in composure in their back-line, he seems worth the money. Also, someone worth the money is Aaron Wan-Bissaka, who was perhaps statistically one of the best full-backs in the league last season.

He looks a huge upgrade over the dodgy Ashley Young and set to make that right-back position his own. Daniel James’s also been signed for £15 million from Swansea City in a gamble, but his huge potential makes that worth it. Aston Villa also shocked many by spending £144.5 million on more than 12 signings! Tyrone Mings(£20million), Wesley(£22.5million), Matt Targett(£13.95million) and Tom Heaton(£7.92million) were only some of the acquisitions for the promoted side.

Champions Manchester City are already favourites to win the league title – and you can use review of betfair as a starting point to bet on the Premier League – but they’ve strengthened further and look unstoppable. City signed Atletico Madrid defensive-midfielder Rodri for £62.8 million as a successor to Fernandinho, a role he’s already gelled into perfectly. Joao Cancelo was also signed as Kyle Walker’s competition for £27.6 million in an attempt to further fire up their wing-play in the season they attempt an unprecedented trifecta of Premier League title wins. Angelino(£10.8million), Pedro Porro(£10.8million) and Zack Steffan(£7.2million) were also signed along with Scott Carson(loan) and Ryotaro Meshino(£900k) but are unlikely to feature.

Tottenham Hotspur also finally opened their cash-book to make some signings after over a year of transfer inactivity, breaking their transfer record to sign promising midfielder Tanguy NDombele for £54 million to add more options to their midfield core. Giovanni Lo Celso’s brought in as Christian Eriksen’s potential replacement on a loan with an option to buy, while Ryan Sessegnon’s also been roped in for £24.3 million to add power through their left side.

The winners of the Premier League transfer window, however, were perhaps Arsenal. The Gunnars spent £138 million, making several prolific signings to boost Unai Emery’s squad strength. Nicolas Pepe became their club-record buy for £72 million. Considering that he was only the second person in Europe(after Lionel Messi) to score and assist in double figures last season, the Gunnars can expect some real fireworks from him.

Moreover, promising French defender William Saliba was also signed for £27 million, but he’ll arrive next summer. Celtic’s Kieran Tierney arrived for £24.3 million as their long-term left-back option, being known for his fiery work in Scotland. David Luiz’s also been signed as the solution to their defensive crisis for £7.8 million, while Spanish midfielder Dani Ceballos is all set to glitter up their attack even more with his creative genius.

Everton also went beyond the £100 million spending mark by bringing in promising players like Moise Kean, Andre Gomes, Lucas Digne(deals made permanent) into the side. Leicester City also spent cleverly on Youri Tielemans and Dennis Praet, while West Ham United also spent high on big Sebastien Haller.

While the Premier League spending racked up over the £1 billion mark, it was surprising that Liverpool made no prominent acquisition. Only Adrian’s been signed on a free, as they along with Chelsea(transfer banned) are the only big sides not to indulge themselves in what was a feisty transfer window in England.
