Premier League golden boot contenders

Harry Kane came out on top of his back-and-forth Premier League Gold Boot race with Mohamed Salah in 2020/21.

The English striker has his sights set on another eye-catching individual season as he aims to win the Premier League top-scorer award for the fourth time. Where he stays at Tottenham or moves to Man City, he is the betting favourite with FanDuel and other bookmakers to be the top goalscorer this season as well.

However, given the fierce competition provided by the likes of Mohamed Salah, Bruno Fernandes, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Raheem Sterling, that could be easier said than done.

Chelsea’s impending signing of Romelu Lukaku is likely to make Kane’s task of retaining his crown even more daunting.

Now, without further ado, let’s take a look at the top three candidates to win the Premier League Golden Boot in 2021/22.

#3 Romelu Lukaku

Romelu Lukaku is on the verge of returning to the Premier League after a two-year hiatus, eager to prove his doubters wrong.

Despite his underwhelming stint at Manchester United, the Belgium international has developed into one of the fiercest strikers in Europe during his two-year spell at Inter Milan.

After netting 30+ goals in both seasons in Italy, Lukaku will be aiming to pick up where he left off two years ago as he gears up for his second stint at Chelsea.

During his previous eight-year spell in the Premier League, the 28-year-old racked up 113 league goals, defending the colours of Chelsea, West Brom, Everton and Man Utd.

He is now set to return to Stamford Bridge in a mouth-watering £97.5m deal and is expected to spearhead Thomas Tuchel’s title charge in 2021/22.

Lukaku has never won the Gold Boot despite his goalscoring proficiency during his past experience in England.

That alone should provide a huge incentive to the highly-rated striker to challenge for this flattering accolade.

#2 Mohamed Salah

Mohamed Salah is no stranger to lifting the Gold Boot award, having already done that twice in his four Premier League seasons with Liverpool.

Since returning to England in 2017, the 29-year-old has established himself as one of the finest forwards in the Premier League.

With 95 top-flight goals under his belt, no one can put it past the Egyptian superstar to achieve the Gold Boot hat-trick in the upcoming season.

Salah and Kane went stride-for-stride throughout most of the 2020/21 campaign, with the Liverpool talisman eventually falling one goal short of his Tottenham counterpart.

The former Chelsea flop has reached the 20-goal milestone in three of his four Premier League seasons at Anfield, which comes as further confirmation of his scoring prowess.

#1 Harry Kane – the man, the myth, the beast

There is still a veil of mystery surrounding Harry Kane’s future as Manchester City continue to pursue his signing from Tottenham Hotspur.

Fresh from a record-tying season that saw him top both the scoring and assists charts, with 23 strikes and 14 lay-offs, the England captain will be a man to beat.

Kane has won the Premier League Golden Boot award on three occasions, smashing a 20-goal barrier in five of his last seven league campaigns.

A potential move to the Etihad would increase the 28-year-old’s chances of grabbing the prestigious award again.

But even if he stays in London, Kane should remain the leading candidate to top the scoring leaderboard in England’s top-flight next term.
