Premier League clubs set for another spending spree this winter

After blowing their European counterparts out of the water during the summer transfer window, Premier League clubs are gearing up for another sizeable spending spree.

Europe’s €5 billion transfer window last summer was dominated by the English top-flight, with its clubs accounting for more than two-thirds of the total outlay.

With that in mind, read on as we assess some of the major moves which could be completed by Premier League clubs in the winter transfer window.

Marc Guehi – Crystal Palace

Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi was close to joining Liverpool last summer, but the proposed £35 million move collapsed on deadline day.

Guehi is scheduled to leave Palace when his contract expires next summer and he will generate plenty of interest from clubs across Europe.

However, Liverpool may decide they cannot afford to wait and could explore the possibility of signing him when the winter transfer window opens.

The Reds have been woeful defensively this season, but persuading Paalce to sell a player who could help them qualify for the Champions League will not be easy.

Antoine Semenyo – Bournemouth

Antoine Semenyo has been linked with several clubs, despite signing a lucrative five-year contract with Bournemouth last summer.

The deal reportedly has a £60m release clause inserted, although it is unclear if this can be activated in the next transfer window.

Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal may be tempted to move for the winger, who has been a revelation since joining the Cherries from Bristol City in 2023.

Bournemouth will be eager to resist approaches for the Ghana international given they lost several key players during the summer transfer window.

Kobbie Mainoo – Manchester United

Manchester United rejected a transfer request from midfielder Kobbie Mainoo last summer, but he could push for a move again at the start of next year.

Mainoo’s agent appears to be eager to prise his client away from Old Trafford, and a switch to Serie A is probably his favoured option.

The 20-year-old was far from his best after coming off the bench against Everton on Monday and generally looks displeased with life at the club.

While manager Ruben Amorim does not seem to be a fan of Mainoo, he will be reluctant to sanction a move unless the club signs a replacement.

Nathan Ake – Manchester City

Nathan Ake has fallen down the pecking order at Manchester City and did not cover himself in glory on his most recent appearance for the club.

Ake was handed a rare start against Bayer Leverkusen in the Champions League on Tuesday, but did not do enough defensively during the game.

The 30-year-old attracted interest from elsewhere last summer and Man City could be willing to cash in during the winter transfer window.

Everton were among the Premier League clubs keen on signing the Netherlands international and are reportedly ready to test City’s resolve.

Samu Aghehowa – Porto

Thomas Frank has quickly learned the size of the task he faces after replacing Ange Postecoglou as Tottenham Hotspur manager.

Frank was heavily criticised after his side’s dismal 4-1 defeat at Arsenal on Sunday, although the club are reportedly happy to keep faith with him.

The former Brentford boss has stressed that he knows ‘how to build a team and build a club’, and the winter transfer window will be an opportunity for him to tweak things.

Tottenham are reportedly leading the race to sign Porto striker Samu Aghehowa, and they may step up their interest when the transfer window opens.
