Man City are the value bet in the title race
Since suffering a 1-0 defeat at Liverpool at the end of August, Arsenal have pieced together an impressive 14-game unbeaten run in all competitions.
Although the Gunners were held 2-2 by Sunderland in their most recent outing, manager Mikel Arteta remained bullish about the way the team has been playing.
“We’re disappointed with the result, but so proud of the players because putting into perspective what they’ve done in the last ten games, winning all of them with the number of clean sheets that they had, with seven players injured,” Arteta said.
“Now we reset with the international break, get the [international] players back nice and healthy – the ones that are not healthy make sure that they get healthy, and we go again.
“We’ll look back at what we’ve done, take all of the positive things that we do, the things that we have the opportunity to improve as well and start to plan what is coming because it’s going to be very demanding.”
While Arteta was keen to remain positive after the result at the Stadium of Light, he will have been frustrated that his team allowed Man City to narrow the gap at the top of the table.
Pep Guardiola’s side showcased their title credentials on Sunday, recording a stylish 3-0 victory over reigning champions Liverpool at the Etihad Stadium.
That result undoubtedly sent an ominous warning to the rest of the Premier League that City’s new-look squad is finally beginning to gel.
Having failed to hit their usual standards last season, City are beginning to look like a team which believes it can regain the Premier League title.
“The team has a good vibe,” Guardiola said. “We had energy. We lost energy last season – I don’t know why. We were not like this team has been for many years.
“We lost players but we tried to push each other and we were not able to do it. Even then, we finish third – normally in that situation in the Premier League you finish tenth.
“Since the Club World Cup in the United States, I felt something different than what happened last season in general.
“In October and November, you don’t win the Premier League. The team that wins is the one that grows. You can be top but you have to be better and better. We talk about that a lot.
“We have the feeling we are in that way. We are back in many things. I have the feeling it’s back and we can play in different ways now. That’s good for us but not for the opponents. They don’t know what we’re going to do.”
Guardiola’s confidence in his team is an extremely worrying sign for Arsenal given his track record of winning major silverware.
When Man City rattled off four consecutive title successes in the Premier League, they demonstrated a relentless streak that their rivals could not match.
Arsenal buckled under the pressure on more than one occasion and there is every chance that history will repeat itself again this season.
Guardiola will already have identified the clash between the two sides at the Etihad next April as the fixture which could tip the title race in City’s favour.
While Arsenal bought well during the summer, City still possess a deeper squad. That factor could be crucial in determining which club lifts the trophy at the end of the campaign.
