Hicks quickly settled into a central defensive role at Mansfield last season and his experience proved invaluable to the youngsters around him. His tenacity and never-say-die attitude made him an instant hit with the fans before he went down with a series of injuries after the turn of the year. He eventually needed an operation to reconstruct cruciate knee ligaments but was forced to retire from league football in February 2002.
