Comments:

David Batty is shown a straight red card after committing a late tackle on Radoslaw Michalski. England had to sweat it out for over a month before the last game of the group between Sweden and Poland on 9th October. A draw or better for Poland would be enough to stop England from qualifying in the runners-up spot. Sweden did them a favour and won 2-0. Four days later the play-off draw was made and England would face Scotland in a two-legged play-off.
