Striker Damien Whitehead netted twice in his first start of the season to earn Macclesfield's first start of the season to earn Macclesfield's first home League win in five months. The former Warrington Town goalgetter - who had scored six in five games towards the end of last term - had been eased back by boss Peter Davenport after a prolonged close season lay off. Whitehead confirmed Macc's early superiority when he met Ben Sedgemore's cross with a firm header into the roof of the net. Town dominated the first half, with Alan Marriott particularly excelling when stopping two Sedgemore shots. St. Helens-born Damien made it two-nil when, having hit the underside of the bar, he glanced Steve Wood's return into the far corner. Only then did Lincoln come in to the game, and came close to reducing the arrears when Gavin Gordon latched on to Wood's suicidal backpass. His lob was wide of Tony Bullock, and the upright.

This attendance set a new record for the lowest for a Football League game at Moss Rose. The previous low was 1,541 against Mansfield Town on 2 November 1999. This was Macclesfield's third-ever win against Lincoln. The others were the Imps first League visit in April 1998 (1-0) and their only GM Vauxhall Conference trip in April 1988 (2-0). The latter success included a goal from current day Silkman, John Askey. League Position: 13th

Comments:

Lincoln's only win at Moss Rose came in the First Round of the FA Cup in 1968/69. The Imps scorers in a 3-1 win were Peter Kearns, Lewis Thom and, current Derby County boss, Jim Smith. League Position: 11th
