With their first attempt dating back to 7 December 1901, this was Chesterfield's first-ever league win in Bristol. It was also the first time they'd scored two goals in a game at Ashton Gate as the last time they netted twice at City was on 24 October 1903 when the Robins played their home matches at the St John's Lane Ground. Chesterfield's only previous win in the city was a 2-0 success against Bristol Rovers in the League Cup at Eastville on 22 September 1964.
