After starting the 2000-01 season on the transfer list, Mark finally cemented a first-team place at Oldham Athletic when a switch from midfield to left back saw him unexpectedly oust Andy Holt from the side. Such was the transformation in his fortunes that he finally came off the list in April although he moved on to Chesterfield by the end of the year.
Mark signed a new one-year contract at Chesterfield in May 2004 but it was cancelled in March 2005. His contract at Port Vale was extended to June 2006 in June 2005.
