Isco says Modric should win 2018 Ballon d’Or

It’s been a massive year for Real Madrid’s Luka Modric. He’s already won the Champions League, played in a World Cup final and won the Golden Ball at the 2018 World Cup, now his team-mate Isco says the Croatian should be awarded the 2018 Ballon d’Or award too.

Isco made his comment after defending Champions League winners Real Madrid began the group stages with a comfortable 3-0 home win over Roma. Modric was again in good form and it was his pass that set up Gareth Bale for their second goal of the game. That’s something Modric is rather used to doing as the goal against Roma was the 12th time he’s assisted a goal by the Welsh international, more than any anyone else in Bale’s career.

Nothing but praise from Isco

It was Isco who was singing the praises of the Croatian star after the game, as quoted in today’s football news. “He deserves the Ballon d’Or, he’s a unique player,” said the Real Madrid star. “Modric gives us a lot every game. He’s fundamental for us. hopefully we can all be at his level. He deserves the Ballon d’Or, he’s a unique player.”  Not since 2007 has anyone apart from Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo won the award.

There were times during the summer when it looked as if Modric might not even start the new season with Real Madrid. There was plenty of talk about him moving to Inter Milan during the transfer window but Modric stayed in Spain looking to help Real Madrid regain the La Liga title and attempt to win the Champions League for the fourth year in a row.

Speaking after the match Luka admitted that it’s been a difficult start to the season for him as he was mentally and physically fatigued after his World Cup exploits but said: “I’m feeling better every day” which isn’t great news for his opponents.

Modric Not Thinking Too Much about Ballon d’Or

When asked about the 2018 Ballon d’Or award, Modric replied: “I’m proud that the fans and fellow players have voted for me, but, I’m not thinking about it too much, the most important thing is the team. If I win it, very good, I will be very happy, but if not, life goes on.” Modric is being backed to win the award and is now clear second favourite with odds of 6/4 available at 888sport. The betting for the award has changed dramatically since the World Cup where Lionel Messi and Mo Salah both had disappointing tournaments, and both are out to 20/1 at 888sport.

Not everyone is tipping Modric to win the 2018 Ballon d’Or. His team-mate Casemiro believes it should be Cristiano Ronaldo who wins the award “because he has been the best throughout last season.”  Ronaldo, who is 7/10 with 888sport to win the award for the third straight year, didn’t have a great night on Wednesday as he was sent off in his Champions League debut for Juventus. Casemiro did however say that “Luka’s year has been spectacular.”

Modric certainly can’t match his main rivals for the 2018 Ballon d’Or award when it comes to scoring. 43 games for Real Madrid last season only saw him score twice and he’s yet to score this season. It’s his creative abilities in midfield that help create goals where he is at his best and that’s why he’s being backed to become the first Croatian player to win the Ballon d’Or and end the Messi/Ronaldo domination of the award.
