The standout game on the opening night is undoubtedly the clash between Real Betis and Nottingham Forest at the Villamarin Stadium.

Betis reached the final of the Europa Conference League last season, but missed out on the title as Chelsea secured an impressive 4-1 victory.

They face a Forest side now managed by Ange Postecoglou, who guided Tottenham Hotspur to the Europe League title at the end of last season.

Tottenham subsequently dismissed Postecoglou due to the team’s poor performances in the Premier League, but he has not been out of work for too long.

Forest have invested heavily in their squad this summer and the affable Australian will fancy his chances of embarking on another deep run in the tournament.

Aston Villa manager Unai Emery has an enviable track record of success in the Europa League having won it four times with Sevilla (2014, 2015 and 2016) and Villarreal (2021).

His team kick off their campaign at home to Bolognia, who qualified for the competition by defeating AC Milan in the Coppa Italia final last season.

Other eye-catching fixtures in the opening round of matches include Celtic’s trip to Red Star Belgrade and Rangers taking on Genk at Ibrox.

The Scottish Premiership giants slipped into the Europa League after failing to qualify for the Champions League group stage and will be desperate to make an impression.
